Welcome

Hi! I'm Samuel Yow, a current NUS MSc CEG Student and Embedded Software Engineer at LightHaus Photonics.

Although I initially graduated with a BEng in Mechanical Engineering from NUS in 2024, I've always felt an affinity towards Embedded Systems Engineering. This could be attributed to a projects I've worked on while I was an undergraduate. In my undergraduate time I was fortunate to have

  • Wrote a NeoPixel Painter based software for an interactive LED infinity mirror during my internship at STUCKSLABS
  • Designed the electronics and wrote the embedded software for an IoT-enabled knee wearable for my EG3301 projects (Innovation and Design Project)
  • Conceptualized, designed, built and wrote the firmware for an electronics wearable that aimed to detect positions that might lead to work injuries. The wearable contained 6 IMUs and the Nordic 5340 SOC, which used BLE to communicate sensor readings. This was done as part of my NOC internship in Paris under FeetMe, a medtech startup. You can view more details on the project at this webpage
  • And countless other projects like a Bluetooth enabled light switch, a IoT-enabled sensor network for counting people and more!

I did all these in the span of just 2 years. Despite my background, I've always been pushed towards doing embedded software projects and I've loved doing it ever since, and made the decision to work towards an Embedded Systems Career.

  • I took 2 Electrical Engineering modules in my final year. EE2028 (Microcontroller Interfacing), and EE2026 (Digital Design). Though the modules are supposed to be quite challenging, I enjoyed diving into the foundations an embedded programmer should have. Through these modules I learnt to write in ARM Assembly, write bare-metal in STM32Cube, and write Verilog using Vivado
  • I'm also currently pursing a MSc in Computer Engineering at the same time as working. The goal of this Masters is to give me both the certification to be an embedded engineer and to expose me to concepts relevant to this line of work.

I plan to update this page with what I have worked on in the past and currently. I see it as a way to reflect on my progress as I progress in my career, and a way to motivate myself to keep growing and learning.

Thanks, and welcome to my site!
